Complexity and the limits to knowledge.

چکیده
Economies are systems in which the macroscopically observable quantities emerge from the effects of interactions amongst the individual constituents of the system. They exhibit key features of complex systems: short-term non-predictability, emergent properties and multiple possible histories. The conventional approach to the control of the economy at the aggregate level requires the ability to both make reasonably accurate predictions of what will happen in the future in the absence of policy changes and have a reasonably accurate understanding of the impact of policy changes on the economy. Neither of these is the case. There are inherent reasons why the ability to forecast with any reasonable degree of accuracy over time is severely limited, and why the ability to extract information from aggregate time-series data about the ways in which economic variables interact is also restricted. The implication is not that governments should do nothing. The actions of governments clearly do have consequences, for better or for worse. But the conventional way of thinking, which requires a world which behaves like a dependable machine, needs to be abandoned. q 2004 Published by Elsevier Ltd. CO RR

The effect of language complexity and group size on knowledge construction: Implications for online learning
This study investigated the effect of language complexity and group size on knowledge construction in two online debates. Knowledge construction was assessed using Gunawardena et al.’s Interaction Analysis Model (1997). Language complexity was determined by dividing the number of unique words by total words. It refers to the lexical variation. The results showed that...
متن کاملUsing Complexity to Simplify Knowledge Translation; Comment on “Using Complexity and Network Concepts to Inform Healthcare Knowledge Translation”
Putting health theories, research and knowledge into practice is a challenge referred to as the knowledge-toaction gap. Knowledge translation (KT), and its related concepts of knowledge mobilization, implementation science and research impact, emerged to mitigate this gap. While the social interaction view of KT has gained currency, scholars have not easily made a link between KT and the concep...
متن کاملApplying KT Network Complexity to a Highly-Partnered Knowledge Transfer Effort; Comment on “Using Complexity and Network Concepts to Inform Healthcare Knowledge Translation”
The re-conceptualization of knowledge translation (KT) in Kitson and colleagues’ manuscript “Using Complexity and Network Concepts to Inform Healthcare Knowledge Translation” is an advancement in how one can incorporate implementation into the KT process. Kitson notes that “the challenge is to explain how it might help in the healthcare policy, practice, and research communities.” We propose th...
متن کاملInvestigating the relationship among complexity, range, and strength of grammatical knowledge of EFL students
Assessment of grammatical knowledge is a rather neglected area of research in the field with many open questions (Purpura, 2004). The present research incorporates recent proposals about the nature of grammatical development to create a framework consisting of dimensions of complexity, range and strength, and studies which dimension(s) can best predict the stat...
متن کاملThe effect of knowledge based economic indicators on the countries' economic complexity
Countries’ economic growth and development are significantly dependent on their productive capacity. In this research, we aimed to investigate which components of a knowledge-based economy has a more meaningful role in the production capacity. In order to measure production capacity, we used one of the most up-to-date indexes, the economic complexity index. The research used data panel consist...
متن کاملConnections, Communication and Collaboration in Healthcare’s Complex Adaptive Systems; Comment on “Using Complexity and Network Concepts to Inform Healthcare Knowledge Translation”
A more sophisticated understanding of the unpredictable, disorderly and unstable aspects of healthcare organisations is developing in the knowledge translation (KT) literature. In an article published in this journal, Kitson et al introduced a new model for KT in healthcare based on complexity theory. The Knowledge Translation Complexity Network Model (KTCNM) provides a fresh perspective by mak...
